You are invited to an Envision Utah forum on addressing Utah’s housing demand from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at the Gallivan Center (239 South Main Street) in Salt Lake City. Envision Utah’s new resource, Compact Housing: Markets, Realities, Concerns and Solutions, will be unveiled.

Utah’s demographics are undergoing dramatic changes as our population continues to grow. The average household size is decreasing as groups such as seniors and young families comprise an increasingly larger portion of the population. These changes require a broader diversity of housing types than is now available, yet many communities are apprehensive about changes they perceive such housing may bring. To help cities and counties constructively address this issue, Envision Utah and a stakeholder committee of local housing experts created the compact housing resource, which includes research and discussion regarding:

  • Utah’s changing housing market;
  • Advantages and potential negative impacts of multi-family housing;
  • Public opinion and attitudes towards housing alternatives;
  • Concerns about possible effects on property values, parking, traffic congestion, and crime, and potential solutions to those concerns; and
  • Model ordinances, innovative zoning strategies, and compatible design criteria.

The cost for the forum is only $20 and includes a snack and the Compact Housing resource. We’re looking forward to a lively discussion and hope you can attend. Ted Knowlton, Envision Utah’s Planning Director, will introduce this new resource and lead a presentation on housing issues.

The Compact Housing toolkit has been funded by American Express, ChevronTexaco, Fannie Mae, Garbett Homes, Morgan Stanley Bank, and Wells Fargo Bank.
